Meet Your Hosts

Hi! We're Emily Best (Raleigh) and Jennifer Wilder (Goldsboro). We are so excited to share our love of Mahjong with you!

We’re building a Mahjong community in Raleigh, Goldsboro and Eastern NC! We teach beginner classes, host private events and love sharing our passion for Mahjong with others.

We are not your typical Mahjong instructors. We have built a community of players who are learning together and supporting each other. After your first class with us, you will leave with lots of information to help you and opportunities to play.

We're not interested in teaching you the rules and sending you home. We want you to come back!

OUR OFFERINGS

01

The Foundation

New to mahjong? Start here. A two-hour beginner class covering the tiles, the NMJL card, and the mechanics of gameplay. We build time into the end of class to practice what you have learned.

The Guided Table

Soon after your Foundation class (or any intro to mahjong class) sign up for the Guided Table, our guided play session. Your instructor will be in the room while you play, helping you with gameplay mechanics and strategy. Bring your NMJL card!

The Open Table

No instruction, no pressure, just mahjong. Come play at your own pace. We set up the tables and clean up afterwards. All you have to do is bring your NMJL card.

The Shuffle (Coming Soon)

Feeling competitive? Join our seasonal league and play all season long.

FAQs

  • None at all. The Foundation is built for complete beginners, we start from the very basics and walk you through your first hand.

  • No, you'll need to attend a beginner class first, in person is best, before joining any session beyond The Foundation. It keeps The Guided Table running smoothly for everyone at the table.

  • Nope, not for The Foundation. We provide everything there, tiles from The Mahjong Line, mats, and NMJL cards included. For The Guided Table and The Open Table, just bring your own NMJL card, we'll cover the rest.

  • Straight from The Mahjong Line. We're proud Ambassadors, and it's not just a partnership for us, these are genuinely some of the best-made tiles on the market: substantial weight, gorgeous color work, and a finish that holds up to real, regular play. Once you've played on a set like this, it's hard to go back.

  • Skip The Foundation and head straight to The Open Table, no instruction, just a table full of people who already know the game. This is exactly the gap we built the club to fix: knowing how to play isn't the hard part, finding people to play with on a schedule that actually works is. If you'd still like an instructor in the room while you play, The Guided Table works too if you’re wanting to brush up your Mahjong skills after taking a beginner class.

  • No. Goldsboro sessions run regularly at Walnut Creek Country Club, and Emily runs sessions at multiple locations around Raleigh. We're also teaching across Eastern North Carolina as we grow the club and bring mahjong to more of our community. Check upcoming dates for the current schedule in each city.

  • Whether you've never touched a tile or you're brushing up before The Shuffle, there's a seat here for you.

  • Our prices vary by class based on the following factors: length of class, room rental fees, and supply costs. Free locations have lower prices than those we have to pay for. We’re always looking for new places to hold events and classes in Goldsboro and Raleigh. If you think you have a space that would work well for us, please email us at info@919mahjclub.com.
